Minister convenes high-level meet

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sports Minister M. Vijayakumar convened a high-level meeting on Friday to discuss various proposals to rejuvenate Kerala football after its poor showing in the recent Santosh Trophy.

Initiating the discussion, the Sports Minister himself clarified that the Kerala Football Association (KFA) would remain the umbrella organisation for the promotion of the sport in the State and the meeting was convened to see how best the Government and the Kerala State Sports Council could supplement the efforts of the KFA to help football regain its past glory.

The discussion was attended by KFA secretary K.P. Sunny, former internationals C.C. Jacob, Victor Manjila and U. Sharaf Ali, veteran football administrator K. Bodhanandan, KFA vice-president, Kochueapen Mappilai, KSSC president T.P. Dasan and football writer Bhasi Malaparambu.

The proposals include strengthening of department and public sector teams as well as private clubs, evolving a strategy to generate more resources, revival of the now defunct all-India tournaments and taking the game to the masses.

A working group was constituted at the meeting and was asked to submit its report by July 31.
