Chennai: Jimmy Carr, possibly the most accomplished inside forward in competitive hockey that Tamil Nadu has seen, passed away on Friday. He was 83. A dribbler nonpareil, (Jimmy) Carr captured the hearts of the connoisseurs in the city, or wherever he wielded the stick, through his aesthetic touch, artistry and adroitness for over a decade and half starting in 1946. He thrived during the period when the sport was at its zenith, and rubbed shoulders with the stalwarts of the era like Kishenlal, captain of the Indian team for the London Olympics. Carr was an Olympic material and would have donned India colours but for being a contemporary of K.D. Singh (Babu), an inside-forward acknowledged as the best in the business at that point of time. For over a decade and more, Carr was the key-player for the State teams starting from 1951 in the National Championships and donned the Railway colours with Kishenlal. Joint winnerHe helped the State team as coach and was the manager of the squad that emerged as the joint winner with Railways in 1967 at Madurai. Carr, who served Railways for over three decades and retired as Assistant Personnel Officer, played a crucial role in Southern Railway Athletics Association. Carr is survived by wife (Laurell), son (Peter) and daughter (Carolyn). — Hockey Correspondent
