ANANTAPUR: The Anantapur Auto Drivers’ Union staged a protest against hike in fuel prices here on Friday by blocking traffic at the Tower Clock circle by placing autorickshaws across the roads. Movement of vehicular traffic on the busy circle came to a standstill for more than half-an-hour due to the protest. In the absence of industries and other employment sources in the district most of the rural youth were taking to autorickshaw driving for their livelihood by shifting their families to the nearby urban areas. But, the frequent fuel price hike, hike in the prices of other consumables utilised in autorickshaws has made the lives of autorickshaw drivers and their families difficult. The fresh bout of fuel price hike would further cut into the earning of the autorickshaw drivers, most of whom make out a living not by owning autorickshaws but taking them on hire from others. They requested the Centre to roll back hike in the fuel prices.
