ARIYALUR: The Ariyalur district administration has set July 15 as the deadline to the departments concerned for removing encroachments alongside highways, temple land, tanks, water courses, and poramboke land.
Chairing a meeting of officials of these departments, District Collector in-Charge Pitchai said they were empowered to remove the encroachments on areas under their respective control. Hyacinth and other water weeds must be removed from canals and water catchment areas, Mr. Pitchai said.
Encroachments in revenue lands must be removed by the respective Revenue Divisional Officers and Tahsildars with the help of the police department.
Of the 96 tanks in the district, 69 were under the Marudaiyaru Division. Survey has been initiated in 17 tanks in Senthurai taluk and 32 in Ariyalur taluk.
The boundary markings must be made by this month end, he said.
The Highways Department has evicted encroachments at 11 identified spots. Structures that would hamper future road widening must also be removed immediately, he said.
A total of 3,026 encroachments have been removed and 2,751 acres retrieved, Mr. Pitchai informed. At the level of panchayats, 366 cases have been registered and 107 hectares of land retrieved from encroachers.
He vested the Revenue department with the responsibility of evicting the encroachments and marking the boundaries procedurally.
