13 per cent rise in railway earnings
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Southern Railway achieved 13 per cent growth in passenger earnings during June and the cumulative earnings from April to June 2009 now show an approximately 6 per cent increase over the corresponding period last year.
The increase in June has been primarily in the category of non-suburban traffic, which is essentially long-distance traffic.
The revenue is approximately Rs.190 crore, which is about 13.4 per cent more than the non-suburban earnings in June 2008.
The higher overall passenger earnings was possible on account of increasing the number of coaches in highly patronised trains, adding coaches in response to the waitlist position and running 183 special trains during the month, according to a Southern Railway press release.
