JEE counselling dates all set to change

BHUBANESWAR: Committee of Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), Orissa is all set to miss the scheduled date for counselling for admissions into professional courses as no decision could be taken on fixing the counselling venue.

The Policy Planning Body (PPB), which met on Wednesday, had asked the JEE authorities to scout for possible venues for counselling.

“The venue has not been finalised. It would take couple of days more,” said Omkar Nath Mohanty, Vice-Chancellor of Biju Patnaik University of Technology and member of the PPB, over phone from Bangalore on Friday.

At least 10 days are required to inform different rank holders in JEE to reach the venue.

According to a JEE official, seven days are needed to send information through postal services and three days are kept for travelling.

However, counselling was earlier scheduled to begin from July 11. Now it is unlikely to start the process according to schedule.

JEE authorities said counselling for medical seats would take place first since guidelines of Medical Council of India clearly said admissions into different medical colleges had to be completed by July 25 and classes should begin from August 1.

Similarly, classes for engineering streams should start from August 31.

About 85,000 students were expected to attend the counselling processes for admissions into professional courses like MBBS, master in business admission, master in computer application and engineering courses.

However, authorities termed the delay as blessing in disguise.

Students who aspired to join institutes outside the State had either gone through the counselling process there or taken admissions.

Now those who would be coming to counselling under JEE, Orissa would have made up their minds whether to take admissions or not.

Usually, rank holders in entrance examinations for admissions into Indian Institutes of Technologies often take admissions in Orissa colleges first and later vacate the place once their admissions in IITs are ensured.
