KOLLAM: The Kerala Dalit Federation (KDF) has registered its protest against the failure of Buta Singh, chairman of the National Scheduled Castes Commission, to visit the Chengara agitation site during his visit to the State recently. At a press conference here on Friday, State president of the KDF P. Ramabhadran said it was a “serious lapse.” Mr. Ramabhadran said the Chengara agitation by members of the scheduled communities would complete two years in August. During the course of the agitation, 11 persons had been killed. Mr. Singh giving a clean chit to the State government on the welfare of scheduled communities was without understanding the realities, he alleged. It was unfortunate that Mr. Singh did not even utter a word against the bulk of the allocations from the Centre meant for scheduled community welfare getting lapsed. Mr. Ramabhadran wanted Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan to take over the scheduled communities’ welfare portfolio from the current Minister A.K. Balan. He alleged that Mr. Balan was now spending more time on the SNC-Lavalin issue to save CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan.
