Meet on lake protection

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: Several decisions for protecting the Ramser-listed freshwater Sasthamcotta Lake were taken at a meeting called by District Collector A. Shajahan with various district-level department heads and environment activists here on Friday.

The decisions will be presented at an ad hoc joint meeting by Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran and Forest Minister Benoy Viswom in Thiruvananthapuram on July 10.

One of the decisions was that the government should take steps to constitute a statutory authority for the lake’s protection. Fifty families living on the banks without title deeds should be rehabilitated elsewhere. The meeting wanted all gutters from Bharanikavu and the Sasthamcotta market leading to the lake to be diverted immediately. Steps should be taken to clear the harmful water hyacinth growth on the lake by July 31. Environmental activists Odanavattom Vijayaprakas and Ganga Prasad attended.
