Of no use: The Irular colony in Sivalingapuram, near Anchetti, waiting for power connections.
KRISHNAGIRI: In 2004-05, 22 houses were built for Irular community people in Sivalingapuram, near Anchetti, under a programme called ‘People affected during the combing operation to nab Veerappan’.
All houses have internal wiring and power posts for connections. But they have been waiting till today do get electricity.
The people here eke out their living by taking honey, medicinal plants and collecting firewood from the forests. Though they have approached officials many times, no efforts have been made to give them electricity connections.
They allege that the EB officials are demanding money for giving connections.
Asirmohan Raj, Block Development Officer (Village Panchayat), told The Hindu that he had forwarded about 1,918 applications to the EB officials for free connections.
“Wherever group houses are built, we have forwarded the applications for power connections as soon as we receive them from the beneficiaries. It is for the Panchayats to follow up with the Electricity Board,” Mr. Asirmohan Raj said.
An Electricity Board official in Hosur said only six months ago 68 free connections were given in a hamlet in Manjugondapalli panchayat. “No application is pending with us. If the authorities bring to our notice any delay on our part, immediately we will attend to that,” he says.
A community hall built in 2005-06 also remains unutilised because of lack of power and other basic amenities.
