Bijapur: Compared to last year, all the five taluks in the district have received sufficient rainfall in the months of May and June this year and the sowing activities have gained momentum in the district. According to sources in the district administration, Bijapur taluk received 20.8 mm rainfall in May 2008 as against the normal 36 mm. Basavan Bagewadi received 21.1 mm as against the normal 41 mm. Muddebihal received 9.7 mm as against the normal rainfall of 43.2 mm, Indi received 17 mm, normal being 26.1 mm, and Sindagi received 12.3 mm rainfall, normal being 31.1 mm rainfall. Totally, the district received 16.2 mm rainfall in May last year as against the normal rainfall of 35.5 mm. In June last year, Bijapur received 39.3 mm of rainfall as against normal rainfall of 77.7 mm, Basavan Bagewadi received 22.7 mm rainfall as against normal of 75.6 mm, Muddebihal got 17.7 mm rainfall as against expected 72.3 mm rainfall, Indi received 8 mm rainfall as against expected normal rainfall of 82.9 mm, and Sindagi taluk received 15.5 mm rainfall as against the normal 83.3 mm. In all, the district received 20.6 mm rainfall as against the normal expected rainfall of 78.4 mm. Compared to 2008, the four taluks in the district received sufficient rainfall in 2009. Only Indi taluk has not received sufficient rainfall in June. In May 2009, Bijapur taluk received 83.1 mm rainfall, Basavan Bagewadi received 66.9 mm, Muddebihal 82.6 mm, Indi 52 mm, and Sindagi received 73 mm rainfall. The district received 71.3 mm rainfall while the normal is 35.5 mm rainfall. In June 2009, Bijapur taluk received 108.6 mm, Basavan Bagewadi received 180 mm, Muddebihal received 124.9 mm, Indi 53.1 mm, and Sindagi received 141.1 mm rainfall. The district received 121.6 mm rainfall as against the normal 78.4 mm rainfall. Agriculture Department Joint Director Bairappa said that sowing operations have started in the district as there has been sufficient rainfall. This year the Government has set a target of 3.9 lakh hectares of land in the district for cultivation and sowing has been completed in 1.95 lakh hectares. The district has a stock of 2,500 tonnes of seeds and 8,000 tonnes of fertilizers and it is being distributed to farmers through 18 centres across the district, he added.
