lawFUL SERVICE: S. Rajeswaran, second from right, judge of Madras High Court, declaring open the Mahila Court at Pudukottai on Friday.

PUDUKOTTAI: Legal profession is a rare opportunity for rendering justice to needy people. Lawyers should develop a commitment to serve the litigant public not only for deriving a personal satisfaction through their profession but also for achieving an overall development of society, said Judge of the Madras High Court, S. Rajeswaran.

Speaking after inaugurating the Mahila Court here on Friday, Justice Rajeswaran said that members of legal fraternity should look upon their profession as a greater opportunity for serving the people and not for any undue exploitation of the litigant public. “But for the judiciary, the law and order cannot be maintained in a society. Nor could safety be guaranteed to a citizen,” he said.

Cordial families

Pointing out that the number of cases pending with the Mahila Court here was far less – just 15, he said that it testified to the cordial family relationship prevailing in the entire district. However, the establishment of the Mahila Court aimed at sensitising the masses to protecting their rights.

Conciliation centre

Justice Rajeswaran, who is also the Portfolio Judge for the district, underlined the need for setting up a Mediation or Conciliation centre at the Mahila Court which would act as a catalyst for expeditious disposal of cases.

He allayed the apprehensions of the lawyers that they would be deprived of their revenue, once these centres were set up.

He said that Section 89 of the Code of Civil Procedure ensured payment of fees to the lawyers for cases settled through the Mediation / Conciliation centre.

Principal District and Sessions Judge A. Ayyappan, Judge of Fast Track Court P. Ayyasamy, Chief Judicial Magistrate N. Rajasekar, president of Bar Association A. Ravichandran and Public Prosecutor K. K. Chellapandian were among those who participated.
