Tribal healing camp begins tomorrow

Staff Reporter

Kozhikode: Traditional rejuvenation methods of Kalari and some rare healing methods used by tribal medicine practitioners will be showcased at a five-day Kalari and traditional rejuvenation camp ‘Ayur-Karkidatam-09,’ organised by the Bhargava Kalari Sangam, from July 5 to 9.

Forest Minister Benoy Viswom will inaugurate the camp at the S.K. Pottekkat Cultural Centre on Sunday.

Talking to newspersons, S.K. Rajesh Gurukal of Bhargava Kalari Sangam said the camp, entry to which would be free, would impart classes in the preparation of traditional rejuvenation recipes such as ‘uluvakanhi,’ ‘navadhanyakootu,’ ‘karkidakakanhi,’ and ‘kozhimarunnu’.

It will hold demonstrations on the benefits of ‘mukkootukuli’ and ‘vapour-bath.’

Explaining the benefits of the age-old rejuvenation measures, Mr. Gurukal said the increase in incidence of lifestyle diseases among young people here was due to failure to observe the annual rejuvenation measures such as the ‘karkidakathirummu’ and ‘marunnukudi.’

The five day programme will also feature the demonstration of preparing medicines and treatments by noted tribal medicine practitioners such as Chathan Moopan and Veluchami from Attappadi and Rajan Vaidyar from Kalpatta.

“The tribal healers will camp at the site and provide health tips to the visitors,” said Mr. Gurukal.

A seminar on the traditional healing, exhibition and sale of rejuvenation medicines and a demonstration of Kalari Payatu will be held during the event.
