Latest treatments for leprosy and STD will be discussed at programme. Kozhikode: Recent advances in treatment of ailments in dermatology, venereology and leprology will be discussed in detail during a one-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme ‘Dermafocus-09,’ organised by the Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Cosmetology, Medical College, Kozhikode, at Hotel East Avenue here on Sunday. Detailing the programme schedule, organising committee members Najeeba Riyas and E.N. Abdul Latheef said that around 500 doctors in different streams of dermatology from across the State would attend the programme. Dr. Najeeba, who is also the chairperson of the organising committee, said that an increasing number of leprosy cases was being reported from various parts of the State. “Seventy-five new cases of leprosy were reported this year at the Medical College Hospital here alone,” she said. Leprosy on the riseDespite intensive efforts from the authorities, the eradication of this loathed disease, according to her, was still far away. A few reasons have been cited by experts to be standing in the way of the eradication of leprosy. “The seminar will discuss the advanced methods and medicines available for the treatment of leprosy,” she said. The doctor, who stated that the number of sexually transmitted diseases (STD), including HIV, was also on the rise in the district in recent years, said that the seminar would discuss in detail the latest methods in the treatment of such ailments. The programme will be inaugurated by Medical College Principal P.V. Narayanan. Dermatologists P. Sugathan, K. Pavithran, S. Anandan (Chennai), Jerome Pinto (Mangalore) and Uma Rajan will present papers on different topics on the occasion.
