KOCHI: Vice-Chancellor of the proposed Kasargod-based Central University, Jancy James, has called for a conscious effort on the part of parents and teachers to ensure that the students were fit for their chosen course. Delivering the inaugural address at the merit evening organised by the Sahodaya School Complex Kochi, here on Friday, Ms. James said that it was high time that educational institutions conducted aptitude tests to identify the talent and taste of students. Ms. James said that during her tenure as the Vice-Chancellor of the Mahatma Gandhi University, she realised to her horror that not even 50 per cent of the students cleared all papers of the engineering course by the time the eighth semester results were declared. Students just fell ill or avoided attending classes as they found the lessons incompatible with their aptitude and taste, she said. While many students coming out of the higher educational institutions in the country proved that they were among the best in the world, there were thousands armed with same degree certificate who were unfit either for pursuing further studies for employment. She said that a shocking survey result revealed that not even eight per cent of the students coming out of the higher educational institutions were fit for jobs in tune with the education they receive. This, Ms. James said, was something to think about. She said that one of the major problems faced by the country was the difficulty in getting quality teaching staff and urged talented students to give a thought to teaching as a profession. Ms. James said that students should not end their education on receipt of placement. “Search and identify what is in tune with your aptitude and personality rather than be content with what the recruiting company offers you,” she said. The educationist urged students to go into the field of science, which offered thousands of opportunities. Later, Ms. James handed over certificates to toppers from member schools of Sahodaya School Complex Kochi in the AISSE and AISSCE 2009 exams. Maya Mohan, president of Sahodaya School Complex Kochi, welcomed the gathering and Sunitha S., secretary proposed vote of thanks.
