Tirupur: Even as the textile industry is struggling hard to come out of the impacts of global recession, C.P.Ajith Kumar (33), owner of a dyeing unit here, is all smiles.

Reason is that the Saraswati Veena he made with match sticks a few months ago has finally entered the annals of Limca Book of Records under the ‘development’ category.

Original size

The communication received here a couple of days ago from Limca Book of Records acknowledged the ‘Saraswathi Veena’ developed by him of match sticks as the first one of its kind in its original size and used for professional concerts.

Mr. Kumar’s match stick veena has already been used for live performances at various temple festivals.

“I sent video compact discs of the full length performances to the Limca Book of Records officials as insisted by them for proof,” he told The Hindu.

About the veena, Mr. Kumar tells that he used 63,654 match sticks and spent 756 man hours spreading over 18 months to give a final shape to it.

“To give the instrument durability and strength, match sticks have been reinforced with high quality adhesives and applied few coats of resinous solutions on it,” he said.

Owing to his business commitments, he worked mostly during late hours to come out with this novel veena.

Mr. Kumar has developed the passion for developing innovative products in his school days at Quilandi in Kerala.

He has already come out with miniature models of violin, bullock cart and temple lamps, among others, with match sticks.

Besides, he is a ‘Jack of many performing trades’. He is an artist specialised in paintings of traditional art forms like Kathakali and also a professional tabla player. Mr. Kumar can be contacted at 98430-71114.
