KOCHI: Come July 6, Kerala will witness the onset of the regatta season. The Champakkulam boat race on that day will herald this year’s season of snake boat races. It will mark the festivities that coincide with the season of the Malayali’s favourite festival, Onam. The boat races, beginning with Champakkulam race, will set the water on a fiery course at many locations across the State. The Nehru trophy boat race at Alappuzha next month will be the cynosure of all in the boat race season. The snake boat races are significant in another way, as they are crowd pullers. They attract masses from within and outside the country. Tourism industry which has had a slowdown effect should recover from the new season. The spectacle of the oars set in motion in unison could beckon people from far shores and add glory to the Malayali spirit on the water front.
