Eight new trains for State

Some trains have been extended to new destinations


NEW DELHI: The development of railways in Karnataka has received a boost with eight new trains announced in the Railway Budget. Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced 57 trains in all.

However, the State has not been included under the 12 new “Duronto” services.

The new trains are Bangalore-Hubli-Solapur tri-weekly super fast, Howrah-Bangalore weekly super fast, Mumbai-Karwar tri-weekly super fast, Hazrat Nizamuddin-Bangalore tri-weekly Rajdhani express via Kacheguda, Mysore-Yeshwantpur daily express, Lucknow-Rae Bareli-Bangalore weekly super fast, Shimoga-Bangalore daily inter-city express and Bangalore-Kochuveli weekly super fast service.

Ms. Banerjee announced the extension of some trains in the State.

They are 6517/6518 Bangalore-Mangalore daily train to Kannur, 213/214 Mysore-Tirupati daily service to Chamarajnagar, 2685/2686 Mangalore-Chennai weekly express to Puducherry and 2725/2726 Bangalore-Hubli inter-city daily service to Dharwad.

She said that 2685/2686 Chennai-Mangalore express will hereafter run daily instead of tri-weekly.

She said that the Railways would take up work on laying the Kottur-Harihar line during 2009-10. Similarly, doubling of the Yeshwantpur-Yelahanka and Yelahanka-Chennasandra sections will also be taken up during 2009-10.

Proposals have been initiated for laying new lines in Chickballapur-Sri Sathya Sai Prasanthi Nilayam, Alamatti-Koppal, Anekal Road-Bidadi, Gadag-Wadi, Gadag-Haveri and Nanded-Bidar sections.

The Minister said that the Railways will undertake survey for electrification of the Guntakal-Gooty-Bangalore section during 2009-10.

Bangalore City, Byapanahalli (Bangalore), and Mangalore are among the stations in the State which have been included in the list of 50 to be developed as world class stations.

Hubli and Mysore have been included in the list of stations to have multi-functional facilities such as food stalls and restaurants, bookstalls, PCO/STD/ISD/fax booths, medicines and variety stores, budget hotels and underground parking.
