Amnesty scheme for property tax

Staff Reporter

MCD Standing Committee approves proposal in this regard

‘There are 9.46 lakh taxpayers in the civic body’s net at present’

NEW DELHI: If you reside in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi area and have pending property tax bills, then help is at hand with the civic body now planning to launch an amnesty scheme.

A proposal in this regard was approved by the MCD Standing Committee on Thursday and it will come into effect once it is cleared by the MCD House at its next meeting this month.

As per the scheme, property owners who have been evading the tax net till now will have to pay their pending dues before October 31 and avail of full waiver of penalty as well as interest charged.

But failing this last opportunity, a penalty of 30 per cent will be imposed on them in addition to interest of one per cent per month on the tax due.

The civic body has come up with this waiver scheme as it felt that tax defaulters were not coming up to pay the tax on account of interest components as well as penalty provision.

A survey is being carried out to identify those who have not been paying property tax to the civic body.

According to the figures available with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, there are a total of 9.46 lakh tax payers in the civic body’s tax net at present.
