MCD releases figures to clarify employee “scam”

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Ending the controversy over 45,000 “fake” Municipal Corporation of Delhi employees illegally drawing salaries in their names, Municipal Commissioner K. S. Mehra on Thursday released official figures of the number of employees who have registered for the biometric method of recording attendance and the total number of sanctioned posts in the civic body indicating a gap of 567 employees so far.

Addressing media persons, Mr. Mehra said: “Against the total sanctioned MCD posts of 129,615, our records show that a total of 76,933 forms have been filled for biometric registration by our employees and additionally 2,500 of them have already registered with our Town Hall headquarters for the same. However, 22,000 employees of our education department have not been incorporated in the biometric system of registration yet.” According to the civic body, their sanctioned strength of employees is 129,615, but of these 27,615 posts are presently lying vacant. MCD spokesperson Deep Mathur said: “Salaries are being paid to only 102,000 employees; the remaining posts are lying vacant.”

Reconciling all these figures, the gap between the total employees presently employed and those who have enrolled for the biometric system comes only to 567 posts with 13 more days to go for July 15 which is the last day to register for the biometric system. Commenting on the system of biometric attendance introduced in the civic body three months ago, Mr. Mehra said while earlier the system was not linked to the salaries of the employees, from July 15 onward those employees who fail to register would be denied their salaries from the subsequent month.
