public ire: CPI activists staging a ‘rail roko’ in protest against the rise in the prices of petrol and diesel in Anantapur on Thursday. ANANTAPUR: Three Left parties — CPI, CPI (M) and CPI-ML (UI) — staged separate protests here on Thursday against petrol and diesel price hike effected by the Centre on Wednesday night. The parties alleged that the step would further burden the lives of poor and middle-class. Activists and leaders of CPI led by its district secretary D. Jagadish staged ‘rail roko’ in the railway station here by detaining a passenger train for about half an hour. The party activists squatted on the track in front of the train and raised slogans against the fuel price hike. Ninth hikeSpeaking at the protest Mr. Jagadish said the fresh bout of petrol price hike was ninth hike effected by the UPA Government led by the Congress since 2004. He feared that the fresh hike would have multiple impact on various sectors and burden the lives of poor and middle-class further. He demanded that the Centre roll back the hike and provide some respite to the people already reeling under severe economic stress. The activists of CPI (M) took out a procession from the party office to the Tower Clock circle and burnt an effigy of the Petroleum Minister protesting the fuel hike.
