Shot in the arm
The gay movement in the country received a shot in the arm with the Delhi Court decriminalising gay sex on Thursday. With the court’s ruling coming a bare three days after the nationwide rallies taken out by the gay community in major metros, the issue has bagged national headlines for the second time this week.
What was an issue that people baulked upon at its very mention, is today actively debated, thanks to the media.
And due credit ought to go to filmmakers like Onir of ‘My Brother Nikhil’ fame and Tarun Mansukhani of ‘Dostana’ who brought the issue to Indian drawing rooms. While a strong message has been sent, pertinent questions remain. Will the legislature implement it? And if it does, will it become a rallying point for homophiles across the country? How would the conservatives react? Only time will tell.
