Move to disinvest PSUs criticised

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has criticised the move to disinvest Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in order to raise resources, increase working hours and alter the rules for retrenchment.

Promising to protest against the proposed measures outlined in the latest Economic Survey, the CPI MP Gurudas Dasgupta said the decision to raise Rs. 25,000 crore through disinvestment would be “reckless” and allow private sector to influence the policies of the public sector in its favour.

Mr. Dasgupta said the move to increase working hours from 48 hours to 60 hours would seriously impinge upon the physical faculty of the workers. He also criticised the plan to withdraw prior notice before carrying out retrenchment.

“The government, it appears, is inclined to believe that the success in elections has given an approval to its economic policies. It is unfortunate, we will continue to protest,” the CPI leader said.
