Discoms not to get CISF
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: The Capital’s power distribution companies will no longer have the reassuring presence of the Central Industrial Security Force during raids and other enforcement drives by them.
The Union Home Ministry on Thursday turned down the Delhi Government’s request to maintain the deployment of paramilitary security with the discoms.
Unhappy with the decision, discoms officials said they would petition the Government to urge the Home Ministry to reconsider its decision.
“It will severely hamper enforcement operations. We will find it difficult to conduct raids and crack down on power theft without the security cover,” said a discom official.
Agreement
“We have signed a five-year agreement with the CISF, spent a lot of money to put them up and ensure that they are comfortable. The cover cannot be withdrawn so suddenly,” he added.
According to sources, the decision to withdraw the force was taken after CISF personnel expressed unhappiness over being asked to accompany discom officials while carrying out checks against power theft and for restraining crowds during raids and detaining trouble-makers.
The CISF has been deployed with all three of the Capital’s discoms -- BRPL, BYPL and NDPL -- since 2006 and was temporarily withdrawn just before the recent Lok Sabha elections.
