Chandigarh: The Akal Takht, the highest temporal body of the Sikhs, and the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) that manages key Sikh shrines, on Thursday disapproved of the Delhi High Court judgement which legalised gay sex among consenting adults. “This is against the law of nature and the Gurmukh Sedant (Sikh principles). We will appeal to the Sikhs not to follow this unnatural thing,” Akal Takht head Jathedar Gyani Gurbachan Singh said.
“The creator of this universe created male and female but having this system (legalising homosexuality) will be the first step towards destruction of this world,” he said. SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar said legalising homosexuality was against the principles of Sikhism and religious beliefs. “There is no way that such a thing will be acceptable to the Sikhs. And not just Sikhs, other religions will also not accept this,” Mr. Makkar said. He said if the government made any attempt to scrap Section 377 that criminalises homosexuality, the SGPC would oppose it tooth and nail and added they would ask the Union Government to appeal against the judgment in the Supreme Court. Mr. Makkar said that the Akal Takht was soon going to convene a meeting of Sikh priests to take up the issue. --PTI
