First loss for Magesh

NEW DELHI: Magesh Chandran suffered his first loss in the Montcada International Open chess championship and slipped from the top spot after six rounds at Montcada, Spain, on Wednesday.

On what turned out to be a highly forgettable day for the Indians, Magesh lost to new leader Cuba’s Yusnel Bacallao, Tania Sachdev surrendered to fourth-seeded Spanish Grandmaster Marc Narcisco and S. Kidambi lost to lesser-rated Chilean International Master Luis Rojas.

Only second seed S. Arun Prasad brought some cheer to the Indian camp by scoring an expected victory over his Brazilian rival, Herman Riemsdijk.

The results (involving Indians):

Seventh round: Yusnel Bacallao (Cub, 6) bt Magesh Chandran (5.5); Tania Sachdev (4.5) lost to Marc Narcisco (Esp, 5.5); Luis Rojas (Chi, 5.5) bt S. Kidambi (4.5); Herman Riemsdijk (Bra, 4) lost to Arun Prasad (5).
