Amman: Jordan retained the Vinodini Goenka Trophy for the women’s team event beating Pakistan by 80-44 IMPs in the final of the 15th BFAME bridge championships here on Thursday. Jordan was represented by Yasmin Khatak (captain), Huda Al Saket, May Abu Gharbieh, Azza Qashu, Hana Kredeieh and Randa Saket. This is the second success for Yasmin, May Abu and Azza as they were in the team that won the 2007 Karachi BFAME as well. Pakistan (Tariq Rasheed Khan, Saeed Akhtar, Rashidul Ghazi, Javed Khalid, Parvez Mirza and Abdul Quraishi) beat India 81-63 in the final to claim the Jordan Trophy for seniors. In the open event for the Zakaria Adamjee Trophy, as expected India topped the round-robin stage scoring 340.5 Victory Points and easily qualified for the semifinals. Pakistan (307.5) and Syria (300) are also in the semifinals. With the last round to go, Bangladesh had the best chance to claim the fourth berth in the semifinals. But its loss to lowly rated Bahrain 10-20 in the last match enabled host Jordan, which had beaten Sri Lanka 23-7, to claim that berth by a solitary VP. India chose Syria as its semifinal opponent, while Pakistan will play Jordan.
