Petrol price hike: Congress party draws flak in A.P.

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam, Praja Rajyam and Telangana Rashtra Samiti, on Thursday, slammed the ruling Congress party for yet another hike in petroleum products and asked the State government to release a white paper on the exact volume of revenues that it would get by way of sales tax.

At separate press conferences, TDP MLA Ravula Chandrasekhar Reddy said it was the ninth such hike since the year 2004. He said it was unfortunate that the Congress government had in its manifesto before the recent elections, promised not to hike prices of petroleum products and within two months of its coming to power at the Centre, burdened the people with a steep hike.

PR leader T. Devender Goud regretted that the government continued to use the same, lame excuse of the price of crude oil going up, whereas the State had the option of reducing sales tax and passing on the relief to the consumer.

TRS general secretary Niranjan Reddy termed the petrol price hike as yet another act of ‘public betrayal’ and said that soon it would increase the price of cooking gas, too.

The Opposition leaders said they would launch an agitation very soon and bring pressure on the Union government, demanding that the burden on people be eased.
