‘Check proliferation of SEZs’

Sujay Mehdudia

NEW DELHI: Expressing concern over the proliferation of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) across the country, the Economic Survey has sought a check on them. The government had introduced the concept of SEZs three years ago promising greater economic activity on the back of tax sops.

The Survey stated that besides giving short term relief measures, some fundamental policy changes are needed for the merchandise trade sector and these include checking the proliferation of SEZs. Exports from the SEZs in 2008-09 stood at Rs. 99,688 crore against the total export of $168 billion. The projected exports for 2009-10 from SEZs are Rs.1, 10,000 crore, it said.

As of May 13, 2009, as many as 568 SEZs had been approved and 318 zones notified.
