Tirunelveli
TIRUNELVELI: Despite their eviction from the hostels on Wednesday night, post-graduate medical students of Tirunelveli Medical College and the house-surgeons of Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, who have commenced their indefinite agitation, continued the sit-in protest on Thursday also. Demanding a minimum stipend of Rs.12,000 for the house-surgeons and a minimum salary of Rs.25,000 for the PG medical students, they have jointly commenced their protest that ultimately led to the sudden closure of their hostels on Wednesday night. Raising slogans pressing their demands, the protestors said they were being paid a paltry sum as stipend. “If the State Government is still adamant, we’ll intensify our agitation further,” they warned. Fast by siddha studentsThe indefinite fast by seven students of Government Siddha Medical College here entered the third day on Thursday. Demanding the appointment of siddha doctors in PHCs across the State under the Centrally-funded National Rural Health Mission programme and protesting the Centre’s move to shift two siddha units to private institutions, the students commenced their protest on June 15. Though the interim stay granted by the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court against the move to shift the siddha units gave a temporary relief to students, their demand of appointing siddha doctors in PHCs still remains unanswered. Meanwhile, the striking students were placed under suspension. Hence, they continued their protest.
