Dubai: Expatriates in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) who want to bring their families to the country must earn a minimum monthly salary of $1,251, up from $751, a top government official said on Thursday. Major General Nasser Al Awadi Al Menhali, director-general of the Naturalisation and Residency Department (NRD), told the Gulf News that the expatriates must also provide their family with independent accommodation. He said the decision was made after a study on the negative effects of allowing residents to bring their families without sufficient income and a suitable place to stay. Previously, the minimum salary requirement was Dirhams 3,000, which was later raised to Dirhams 4,000 and then Dirhams 6,000, which has now been increased to Dirhams 10,000, the paper reported. Al Menhali said a resident should be able to support his family and afford their living costs in line with the labour and residency laws. The new rules will come into effect after an amendment to the residency law, Al Menhali said, without adding a specific date. RCA orphanageUnited Arab Emirates’ Red Crescent Authority (RCA) is building an orphanage in Kerala as part of its efforts to deliver social care to orphans. A visiting team of the RCA laid the foundations for the facility, which will accommodate 150 orphans. They will be imparted social care and educational and professional training so as to improve the living conditions of their families, a statement released by the authority on UAE’s official news agency Wam said. Led by Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, director of the RCA in the emirate of Al Ain, the team opened a health clinic in Kozhikode. — PTI
