Bangalore: The State Government has announced the names of the members of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. They are M.R. Mamatha, N.V. Vasudeva Sharma, Niranjana Aradhya, M.R. Poornima, Madhu and the director of Sathi Association, Bangalore. Nina P. Nayak is the chairperson of the commission. Her appointment to the post was made known on Wednesday. Addressing presspersons here, Minister for Women and Child Welfare P.M. Narendraswamy said Rs. 1.7 crore had been released to the commission for 2009-10. The commission would work for protection of child rights and recommend steps for their effective implementation. It would probe violation of child rights and recommend initiation of proceedings in such cases. Delay in constituting the child rights commission had drawn flak from child rights activists. Though the setting up of the panel was officially announced about two years ago and funds released, there had been inordinate delay in naming the chairperson and the members. Applications were called for the posts in 2008, but the selection process was delayed because of elections. The Minister said the International Women’s Day celebrations would be held at Chowdiah Memorial Hall here on July 8. The Government would present the Kittur Rani Chennamma awards to 15 persons, including film producer Parvathamma Rajkumar, and six organisations for their contribution for the welfare of women.
