Talikote (Bijapur district): The chairman of the Karnataka Vikas Grameen Bank (KVGB), K.P. Muralidharan, has said grameen banks will play a significant role in integrated rural development in future. He was speaking after inaugurating the 410th branch of the bank in Talikote village here on Wednesday.

Mr. Muralidharan said the bank was involved in the implementation of government schemes for alleviating poverty and thus has 38 lakh customers.

By June 2009 the total business of the bank crossed Rs. 6,114 crore. The bank has selected 80 villages to turn them into ‘solar villages’ in the present fiscal year, he added. Fifteen more branches of the bank will be opened in the current fiscal year. The bank will recruit more employees in the next new months, he added.

B.N. Biradar, Assistant General Manager of the Rajeev Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation, Bangalore, lauded the efforts of the bank in offering banking services to the poor.
