THANJAVUR: With a social commitment, Tamil University here has established a forum named ‘Amabalam’ on Wednesday. The necessity for establishing this forum, in memory of V. I. Subramoniam, first Vice-chancellor of Tamil University, was to kindle the fighting spirit of students and teachers against social injustice, wherever it happens, said M. Rajendran, Vice-Chancellor of the University. Students were inspired by the freedom struggle in olden days and then by the Anti-Hindi agitation. Now it appears they have become immune to many social evils and injustices. “Besides teaching subjects, we felt that it is the duty of a university to mould students and teachers as responsible citizens and those who can fight against evils,” Dr. Rajendran explained. “The name ‘Ambalam’ has been chosen for the following reasons – it refers to Amabalatharasan Nataraja-open space. We want to promote transparency in administration. Another meaning is ‘Amabalapaduthal,’ meaning to expose. Third meaning is ‘Amabalakarar,’ who is the all powerful headman of a village and the one with the right and power to oppose evils,” he added. The concepts of ‘Ambalam’ would be practised within the campus. On Wednesday students and teachers took a pledge to be honest in mind, pure outside and enhance intelligence.
