THANJAVUR: Prithika (13), a student of Kamaraj Girls Higher Secondary School at Thiruvaiyaru, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence at Sirupuliyur village on Wednesday night. Prithika took the extreme step as she was “humiliated” in the school. The purse of one of her classmates containing Rs. 22 went missing on Wednesday. It was later found in Prithika’s bag. While Prithika pleaded that she had not taken the purse, school Principal Vimala allegedly punished her by making her stand on her knees for the whole day. Unable to tolerate the humiliation, she might have taken the extreme step, people of her village said. They staged a demonstration on Thursday at Thiruvaiyaru demanding action against the Principal. Her parents refused to accept the body from Thiruvaiyaru Government hospital till evening.
