451 anganwadi workers arrested

Special Correspondent

THANJAVUR: The police arrested 123 part-time Anganwadi workers and assistants when they tried to picket the railway station demanding regularisation of their services and wage hike.

Indra, district convenor of Anganwadi Workers’ Association, led the agitation.

They demanded wages on par with counterparts in Central Government projects.

A total of 328 Anganwadi workers, who attempted to stage a road ‘roko’ stir near the Old Bus Stand here on Thursday, courted arrest. They were, however, let off later.

Wearing black badges and led by district president of Tamil Nadu Anganwadi Workers and Assistants’ Association S. Thangam, they demanded introduction of a time scale of pay.

The police removed them.
