Several artistes invited to the show ‘Bengaluru has around one lakh Oriyas’ BHUBANESWAR: Thousands of Oriyas who have made Bengaluru their home-away-from-home, are an excited lot for the forthcoming Odissi Sandhya, an evening of Odissi dance and music, in the Capital City of Karnataka on Saturday. Three decade-old Orissa Cultural Association of Bengaluru (OCAB) has been hosting the event at the well-known Chowdiah Memorial Hall auditorium in aid of its proposed Odissi Centre -- a centre for Orissan culture -- in the city. “Government of Karnataka has allotted us a piece of land covering 11, 000 square feet at a prime location where we propose to build up our centre that will house an auditorium, a library, a resource centre on Orissa culture and a school to teach Odissi dance and music,” said Utkal Kumar Mohanty, vice-president of the association, while speaking to this correspondent over telephone from Bengaluru. The event further seeks to make the people of Karnataka aware of the rich tradition of Odissi dance and music, Mr. Mohanty maintained. “We have invited the best of the artistes for the show -- internationally acclaimed Odissi dancer Sujata Mohapatra, well-known Odissi Guru, choreographer and percussionist Ratikant Mohapatra, popular Odissi vocalist Bijay Kumar Jena and gifted and budding singer Nazia Alam, daughter of the versatile singer Sikandar Alam,” he said. The event would be the first of its kind for the city, he claimed. “Bengaluru has around one lakh Oriyas, who comprise a huge segment of IT professionals and corporate executives ,” Mr. Mohanty said. Temple coming upOCAB has more than 5,000 members who actively take part in its all activities, said Mr. Mohanty. The association’s sister concern has been building up a majestic Jagannath temple in the city that would be completed soon, he added.
