KOCHI: Those in Kumbalanghi could see the silver lining, even as the monsoon clouds gathered overhead. The Model Tourism Village project, which was fast losing its initial momentum, got a fresh lease of life. Union Minister of State for Food and Agriculture K.V. Thomas has announced Rs. 15 lakh in aid for renovating the park at the mouth of the village. Mr. Thomas, whose ancestral house belongs to the village, was instrumental in conceiving the project and putting this idyllic village on the international tourism map. A meeting convened to evaluate the progress of the project also decided to prepare a proposal for Rs. 2.20 crore for cleaning and preserving Valiyakulam and Kolothumkulam, which are main water bodies in the village and to drench Nattuthodu for canal tourism. Watershed funds will be used for this. Retaining walls will be put up along the banks of the 5-km-long Nattuthodu and will be used for promoting canal tourism.
