Ban on Gopal revoked

Principal Correspondent

CHENNAI: The All India Chess Federation (AICF), in its annual general body meeting here on June 29, revoked the ban on G.N. Gopal following his appeal to the AICF President, N. Srinivasan.

In another important development, the AICF has decided to revert to the National ‘A’ championship being a 13-round Swiss format.

This was as per a proposal made by a committee comprising Grandmasters Dibyendu Barua and Abhijit Kune, R.M. Dongre, Bharat Singh Chauhan and D.V. Sundar.

Two players from National women’s ‘A’, National junior boys and girls’ champions, 30 from National ‘B’ and six from previous National ‘A’ all Grandmasters and two nominees of the AICF secretary will take part in the National ‘A’ championship.

Similarly, the women’s National ‘A’ championship will be an 11-round Swiss comprising 20 from National women’s ‘B’, six from previous women’s National ‘A’, all WGMs, National junior girls’ champion and two nominees of the AICF secretary.

All AICF National events will henceforth follow FIDE guidelines of zero-tolerance towards late-comers.

Incentives to States

Three extra seedings will be given to States producing champions, two for second place and one for third place in all age-group National championships.

The AICF has decided that children who are not registered within one year of birth will not be allowed to play in age group National championships.

The tie-break will be decided using Bucholoz system (to determine ranks in a Swiss system where players have the same score) for all National championships.

Punjab’s Narendra Singh will be the vice-president in place of Sameer A. Salgaocar of Goa.
