Farm sowings improve

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The agricultural sowings recorded a steep increase over last week with widespread rain across the State which has resulted in release of water in canals at several places.

A bulletin issued by Agriculture Department on Wednesday said raising of paddy nurseries had peaked in Godavari delta. The farmers were geared to take up agricultural operations on a full scale at places which had good rain last week, particularly on June 28 and 29. The sowings slowed down in parts of Rayalaseema, south Telangana and south coastal districts as they continued to reel under deficit rainfall. . Rushendranath, Additional Director of Agriculture, said the deficit rainfall dropped from 43 per cent last week to 39 per cent. Thirty two mandals of Kadapa district received good rains on Wednesday. He added that the agricultural position was not alarming any more. The sowings in the State went up from 10.08 lakh hectares to 16.71 lakh hectares during the week. Maize was the largest crop so far with an area of 2.14 lakh hectares. With an acreage of 2.34 lakh hectares, Adilabad was at the top of the table in the sowings. It was followed by Mahbubnagar, Warangal, Karimnagar and Medak districts.

Poor operations

The operations were the poorest in Guntur where the area sown was only 11,760 hectares. The situation was no better is East and West Godavari, Krishna, Prakasam, Kurnool, Anantapr and Kadapa districts.
