Bangalore: Members of the Karnataka Government Medical Officers’ Association on Wednesday urged the State Government to consider their pending demands of higher wages, increased allowances and better facilities. “We appeal to the Government on the occasion of Doctors’ Day to consider our demands at least now. Following our strike in November, the Karnataka High Court had directed the Government to meet our pending demands. But we are still waiting,” association president H.N. Ravindra said. Dr. Ravindra told presspersons here on Wednesday that there were no takers for government doctors’ posts in rural areas because of the low pay. “Compared to our colleagues working in Medical Education Department, ESI hospitals or Railways, our salaries are much less while the work load is more. Doctors working at the primary health centres in rural areas are stressed out and their families are suffering,” he said. “We want the Government to pay us incentives such as rural allowance (for those working primary health centres), hardship allowance for medical officers working in urban areas, post-graduate (PG) allowance for those who want to specialise in particular spheres and above all risk allowance as many doctors become victims of infections,” Dr. Ravindra said. Pointing out that there were 1,620 vacancies for the posts of Medical Officers in the State, Dr. Ravindra said 772 posts of specialist doctors had to be filled up immediately.
