Rural colleges propose a common fee of Rs. 55,000 Urban colleges want management quota fee up at 1.25 lakh HYDERABAD: Two extremely opposite positions have been taken by the managements of engineering colleges on the issue of course fee hike and the enhancement of management quota this year. While the rural colleges have maintained that the management quota remain at 25 per cent like last year, urban colleges want the quota to be increased to 30 per cent at least. The rural colleges proposed a common fee of Rs. 55,000 while the urban-based colleges also wanted the management quota fee to be hiked to Rs. 1.25 lakh from the present Rs. 90,000. The proposals were submitted to the Admission and Fee Regulation Committee (AFRC) individually by all the colleges. No surpriseThe position taken by rural colleges is not surprising as they don’t find takers in the management quota and many colleges surrender the same to the convenor for making admissions. However, management seats in urban colleges sell like hot cakes with parents willing to pay from Rs. 3 to Rs. 10 lakh, depending on the college and course, in addition to the prescribed fee. Not in favourMeanwhile, sources said that the government was not in favour of increasing the fee while it is not opposed to enhance the management quota to 30 per cent with a slight increase in the management quota fee. Marginal increaseIf the colleges managements put some pressure the convenor’s quota fee may be increased by a couple of thousands only. Anyway, the fee has to be reviewed now as per the Supreme Court directions which allow review of fee every three years.
