Bescom prepares shutdown rota

Special Correspondent

Government delaying announcement of load shedding hoping it will rain

Some of the industries had been demanding a formal announcement

All Escoms asked to prepare load shedding rota

BANGALORE: Bescom is learnt to have prepared a rota for streamlining the ongoing unscheduled load shedding in Bangalore city.

According to the rota, which is expected to be implemented from Thursday, domestic consumers will have to face a load shedding of one hour each in the morning and evening peak hours (between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. and between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.).

The industries and commercial consumers will go without power for two hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sources said that it was only an informal arrangement to ensure that there was some semblance of order to the ongoing unscheduled load shedding and that “power cuts” were spread over uniformly throughout the day. There was a demand from industries to come out with such a rota as it would put an end to the chaos.

Sources said that all Escoms had been asked to prepare rotas by Monday for enforcing load shedding in the towns, cities and rural areas coming under their jurisdiction. The Government would take a decision on whether to go ahead with those rotas after assessing the rainfall situation. If the inflows to the three major hydel reservoirs improved by then, the Government might drop the idea of enforcing formal load shedding through such rotas. If the dry spell continued, the rotas would be implemented formally.

The Government was said to be delaying the implementation of formal load shedding as the commencement of rains in the Western Ghats had increased the hopes of the power shortage being mitigated. If the rains failed, then there were possibilities of the Government restricting the daily power supply to the State to about 80 million units a day and the share of each Escom gets reduced accordingly. The Escoms have to prepare their load shedding rota taking into account the reduction in power availability.

Meanwhile, the ongoing load shedding in Bangalore reduced marginally on Wednesday compared with earlier days as a generating unit in Raichur Thermal Power Station which had developed technical snag resumed generation. Besides, the power consumption too was not high due to the rains which had reduced temperature levels.

On Tuesday, the Escoms offloaded demand of about 1,200 MW through unscheduled load shedding while an additional 1,200 MW was offloaded through scheduled load shedding mostly in rural areas.
