VIJAYAWADA: The city unit of the CPI (M) has criticised the ruling Congress for issuing a GO to convert most of its share of funding for the projects taken up under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) into loan. Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, CPI (M) city secretary R. Raghu said that the Congress leaders would have to answer for the State Government’s decision that it would treat a major chunk of its share as loan and not as grant. The Congress leaders said that the JNNURM funds were a boon to the city and its development. Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal took all possible mileage out of the JNNURM programme, and used to claim that he was instrumental in the sanction of funds under the programme. But now, when in crisis, the MP was suggesting that the matter should be represented to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to reverse the decision. Mr. Raghu recalled that not many were willing to agree with the CPI (M) contention that the JNNURM programme was designed duly following the World Bank guidelines. The CPI (M) lost when the issue was put to voting in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) general body meeting. “But now, our stand is vindicated with the State Government’s GO. It’s against the sprit of 72nd amendment to the Constitution,” he said, and demanded that the government release the funds without any riders. Meanwhile, the CPI (M) organised a meeting to commemorate the services of veteran leader Koratala Satyanarayana on the occasion of third death anniversary.
