KOCHI: Action was initiated against 34 private buses in the city during a special monsoon drive led by P.K. Stephen, Deputy Transport Commissioner, Central Region, on Wednesday. Checks were conducted by five teams of Motor Vehicle Department officials at areas under the jurisdiction of the Regional Transport Office between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. During the checks, Rs. 1,28,400 was collected as fine from 224 erring drivers. Action was initiated against buses found operating with leaking roofs, torn window shutters or curtains and eroded platforms. Driving licences of drivers who were found overtaking along the left side or driving along the right side were impounded for follow-up action. Action was also taken against 20 two-wheeler riders for not using helmets. Five car drivers were fined for not using seat belts, 20 for improper use of lights, 13 for driving without licence, 17 for using mobile phone while driving and for reckless driving, nine for overloading and 14 for sound pollution. The special drive will continue all through the monsoon period, an official release here said.
