Ramky not to cut back GHMC staff

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Ramky Enviro Engineers on Wednesday clarified that it has no plans to reduce or retrench employees working in the sanitation wing of GHMC.

The company said it would take up the integrated solid waste management project on ‘as it is’ basis. It will also enter into formal contract with existing contractors.

In a release, Ramky officials maintained that tricycle operators are an important link in door-to-door collection of garbage and their working conditions will be upgraded by providing protective gear and regular health check-ups.

They would continue to work normally, Executive Director of Ramky Group M. Goutham Reddy said.

The contract with GHMC does not include ‘sweeping’ activity and most of the workforce in GHMC is engaged in this activity and such large contingent of workforce will continue to work under GHMC, the release said.

Mr. Reddy maintained that there would be no additional liability or obligation on GHMC in case of increase of the project costs. The project is based on Public Private Partnership (PPP) which means that Hyderabad Integrated Municipal Solid Waste (HiMSW), the special purpose vehicle to develop and implement the project, has to make all the investments required for the project.

Under the project, HiMSW will take up primary and secondary collection, manage transfer stations including upgrading existing three stations and developing five new ones, treatment and disposal of garbage and capping the existing dumpsites.

The dumpsites will be allotted at Shamshiguda, Fatullaguda and Gandhamguda.

Meanwhile, the city unit of CPI(M), while demanding repeal of the pact, charged that it would end up privatising the sanitation wing of GHMC.

The party leaders claimed that the GHMC would spend Rs. 1,431 on one tonne of garbage while earlier, it used to spend Rs. 600 to Rs. 700 for the same.
