Hoping for deemed varsity status

Special Correspondent

Chennai: SSN hopes that its application for deemed university status will soon find its way out of the “maze” of the University Grants Commission, where it has been pending for the last three years. Mr. Nadar related the story of applying for a manufacturing plant licence 25 years ago and being given the run-around at the Industries Department.

After losing his temper with the Joint Secretary of Industries — “I was much younger and more impatient then,” he says — Mr. Nadar discovered that a rival firm with global connections was trying to keep him out of the field. The Joint Secretary told him, “Someone is out to kill you…so you could be in this maze.”

Now, “we are in the same maze,” said Mr. Nadar, expressing the hope that a change of leadership at the Human Resource Development Ministry would lead to approvals coming through.
