THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A meeting of the LDF leaders here on Wednesday discussed the draft agreement the government had reached with the private self-financing professional college managements. RSP State secretary V.P. Ramakrishna Pillai, Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran, Congress (S) State president Ramachandran Kadannappally and Mathew T. Thomas, representing the pro-LDF faction of the Janata Dal (Secular), attended the meeting. Education Minister M.A. Baby briefed the meeting about the draft understanding reached with the self-financing college managements. LDF convener Vaikom Viswan told The Hindu that the proposals would be finalised after further consultations at the level of Cabinet sub-committee which had been constituted for the purpose. Mr. Viswan said the fee structure proposed would ensure that the poorer students who gained admission to private self-financing colleges would have to pay only fees at government rates and there would be protection for students belonging to weaker sections. Baby meets VeliyamLater in the evening, Mr. Baby called on CPI State secretary Veliyam Bhargavan, who has been keeping indifferent health for over a week now, to brief him about the various provisions in the agreement. Senior leaders of the CPI rebutted reports in the electronic media that the CPI had boycotted the meeting. Though the party had decided to attend the meeting, senior functionaries of the party could not do so as they had to leave for Delhi to attend the party national executive and council beginning on Friday. They also brushed aside reports that the absence of CPI representatives was linked to Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan’s absence from the meeting.
