KOLKATA: The local footballer transfer season saw a lot of activity on Wednesday with the two I-League sides from the city Mohun Bagan and Chirag United SC signing up a clutch of players. Mohun Bagan retained the services of forward Kartick Kisku and goalkeepers Sangram Mukherjee, Shilton Paul and Chirodeep Chatterjee. The green and maroon camp drafted in Pralay Dutta (Salgaocar SC), Suroj Mondal and Seikh Azim (both Mohammedan Sporting), while Subhojit Mazumder was a fresh under-19 signing. Chirag United had its first signings of the season when it retained Somnath Khara, Gauranga Dutta, Kinshuk Debnath, Arnab Mondal, Sankar Oraon while importing Gopal Das from Calcutta Port Trust. IFA request shot downMeanwhile, The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has shot down the Indian Football Association’s (IFA) request of allowing the clubs to register three foreigners apart from one player of Asian origin in the local league. AIFF has sent a letter to IFA upholding its previous decision of allowing three foreigners including one player of Asian origin in all the tournaments except the I-League, in the new season. The I-League remains the only event in the country that allows teams to register four foreigners including one player of Asian origin. Ahana upsets MehakUnseeded Ahana Banerjee downed second-seeded Mehak Sekhani in the of the under-16 girls’ pre-quarterfinals of the Calcutta Punjab Club AITA talent series here on Wednesday. Banerjee proved to be too good for Sekhani and beat her in straight sets. In another match of the same event unseeded local girl, Priyam Periwal, ended the run of third-seeded Abhilipsa Rath of Orissa while unseeded S. Praveena of Tamil Nadu went past seventh seeded Shreya Das of Bengal in match extended till the decider. It’s Kerketta vs GuhaTop-seeded Sanjib Kerketta and fourth-seeded Shukrit Guha won their respective semifinals to set up a title clash in the under-18 boys’ category of the Calcutta Punjab Club BTA junior tennis. Kerketta beat Shreedhar Gaggar while Guha had it easy against Abhijit Hait in straight sets. The results: Boys’ singles Under-18 (semifinals): Sanjib Kerketta bt Shreedhar Gaggar 6-3, 6-1; Shukrit Guha bt Abhijit Hait 6-2, 6-0. Easy for Special ForcesA Special Forces Unit team defeated Combined Divisions 22-5 in the first semifinal of the Kolkata Police inter-unit rugby here on Wednesday. In the other semifinal, a combination of Headquarters and Third Battalion beat a team of Traffic and Wireless units 7-0. The final will be played on Friday.
