HYDERABAD: Several public and special lectures by distinguished scientists, two symposia on topical areas of research and presentations on a wide range of topics will be highlights during the three-day platinum jubilee celebrations of the Indian Science Academy commencing here on July 2. D. Balasubramanian, president of the academy, told a press conference here on Wednesday that nearly 350 scientists and teachers from all over the country and many institutions in and around the city would deliberate on a wide range of subjects. The venue of the mid-year meeting of the academy is Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Tarnaka. He said special lectures would be given on ‘Genetic diversity in Indian population and its implications in health and disease’ by Lalji singh, director, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, and on ‘Converting copper into gold: very high speed digital subscriber line’ by Surendra Prasad of IIT, New Delhi. LecturesThe public lectures would be on ‘History and heritage of twin cities’ by Narendra Luther, former Chief Secretary, and on ‘Science in service of the soldiers’ by W. Selvamurthy of DRDO, New Delhi. Besides, there would be symposia on ‘Darwin and evolution: introduction’ by V. Nanjundaiah of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and on ‘Indian rock art’ by K. K. Chakravarty, K. Rajan, Chandramouli and Shiva Nagi Reddy. S. Chandrasekharan, secretary, N. Mukunda, in-charge of publications, and other office-bearers of the academy were present.
