Preserve sanctity of profession, doctors told

Thiruvananthapuram: Doctors are the most respected and admired professionals in society and they should strive to preserve the sanctity of their vocation, Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy has said.

She was presenting awards to the Best Doctors for the year 2008 on the occasion of Doctors’ Day here on Wednesday. Ms. Sreemathy said the awards were a small token of the appreciation and faith that the government had in the doctor fraternity.

Twenty-five doctors were honoured with awards in various categories for their meritorious service to society.

The Best Doctor 2008 awards were presented to K. M. Kuriakose, Professor and Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Government Medical College, Kozhikode; N.O. Verghese, Principal, Government Dental College, Thiruvananthapuram ; Thomas John, civil surgeon and paediatrician, General Hospital, Ernakulam; Alfred V. Samuel, psychiatrist and Resident Medical Officer, ESI Hospital, Ezhukone, Kollam; K. Mohandas, Director, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology; and Azad Moopan of the Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences, Kozhikode.

Ten doctors who have retired from service were presented the Eminent Doctors 2008 awards. They include K. Vijayaraghavan, former professor of cardiology, Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram; V. Balakrishnan, former professor of gastroenterology, Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram; M. Sambasivan, former professor of neuro surgery, Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram; T.A. Thomas, former professor of plastic surgery, Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram; Elsie Philip, former professor of paediatrics, Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram; Mathew Parakkal, former professor of internal medicine, Government Medical College, Kottayam; K. Sugathan, former professor of cardiology, Government Medical College, Kozhikode; Sara Verghese, former professor of pathology, Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram; Roy Chally, former professor of urology, Government Medical College, Kozhikode; and K.M. Joseph, former professor of microbiology, Government Medical College, Kottayam.

Special awards were also presented to doctors under the Health Administration and Management category. The awardees include N. Vijayakumar, medical officer, Blood Bank, Taluk Headquarter Hospital, Aluva; T.K. Suma, associate professor of medicine, T.D Medical College, Vandanam, Alappuzha; M.K. Mangalam, Joint Director of Medical Education; Parvathy, medical officer, Mulavukadu primary health centre, Ernakulam; Appu Cyriac, assistant surgeon, Mulavukadu primary health centre, Ernakulam; V.S. Anoop, assistant surgeon, Pattazhi primary health centre, Kollam; K. Sureshkumar, Director, Institute of Palliative Medicine, Kozhikode; Linimol Mathew, radiologist, General Hospital, Ernakulam; and K. Ajithkumar, assistant professor of dermatology, Government Medical College, Thrissur.
